Solemn Magpies pay tribute

- by Davyd Reid

A SOLEMN afternoon at Poowong began with Lang Lang coming from the clouds to pinch a two-point win over the Magpies.

The game came ahead of a tribute to Poowong player Noah Peacock, who had been tragically killed in a fatal collision at Jeetho in South Gippsland while driving from work to training on Thursday afternoon.

There were doubts the fixture would go ahead, however the Poowong players vowed to forge ahead in honour of their fallen comrade.

Fittingly, Noah's brother Jake put in a best afield effort but unfortunately it wasn't enough to get the Magpies over the line, who were pipped at the post.

Following a tight start, the Magpies kicked out to a 14-point lead at the final change only for the Tigers to come home with a wet sail, booting three goals to one to win 6-11 (47) to 6-9 (45).

Peacock, Mitchell De Kleuver, Jared Mills, Rhys Butler, Brodie Ardley and Reide Macqueen helped the Magpies to a winning position.

Helping the Tigers storm home were Mark Penn, Jackson Tribuzi, Nathan Perkins, Aaron Cocker and Jack Jenkins.

NEERIM-NEERIM SOUTH overcame a challenge to account for Trafalgar, 7-8 (50) to 5-6 (36).

In a low scoring affair that went goal for goal, the Cats headed into the final change leading by just four-points, 5-4 to 4-6.

The advantage appeared to be with the Cats as a Trafalgar player was shown a yellow card on the three-quarter-time siren for what umpire Tim Cosstick had deemed a raised elbow.

Still the Bloods found enough to charge to the lead, booting the first goal of the final term.

A soccer goal to Toby Bayne regained the lead for the Cats, who then steadied with consecutive goals to Eddie McGillivray to win 7-8 (50) to 5-6 (36).

Helping keep the Bloods in the contest were Ben Doran, Mitchell Smart, Jackson Noonan, Brodie Burgess, Harrison Malady and Ben Cunico.

LONGWARRY had enough in the tank to hold off a fast-finishing Yarragon.

The Crows had kicked out to a 28-point lead at the final change and seemed in control, only for the Panthers to kick three goals to nil in the final term to bring the margin back to 11-points, 7-10 (52) to 6-5 (41).

Brody Hamilton, Shaun Eckhardt, John Werner, Mitchell Young, Kye Osseweyer and Bailey Osseweyer helped the Crows to a winning position.

Leading the final quarter charge for Yarragon were Lucas Kilday, Oliver Marek, Paul Harvey, Christopher Demicoli, Josh Smith-Butterworth and Heath Darcy.

ELLINBANK and Buln Buln put in ruthless displays, keeping their struggling opponents scoreless.

The Eagles kicked seven goals in the first term and were never headed on the way to winning 23-12 (150) to nil.

Ellinbank coach Mathew Robertson led the charge with five goals with Jake Dean, Jayson Barwick, Jack Cole, Patrick Alger and Lachlan Elliott also among the better players.

BULN BULN booted 32-16 (208) against an undermanned Catani side.

Brendan Wall, Timothy Stoll, Simon Dawson, Brent Waddell, Bryce Monahan and Jaryd Kelly led the way for the Lyrebirds.

Best players for Catani were Jamie Cape, Edward Gebar, Shaun Donnelly, Adrian Fry, Sein Fry and Andrew George.
