Park sculpture named Corymbia Dreaming

-

The Ficifolia sculpture installed at Drouin’s Civic Park earlier this year has been named.

Now called ‘Corymbia Dreaming’ the sculpture was created by artist Jo Caminiti - however, she decided it was best for the community to name it

“My Ficifolia sculpture was created for and belongs to the people of Drouin. It seems fitting that they have a say in naming their new sculpture that has already become something of a landmark,” she said.

Ms Caminiti said the chosen name was “wonderful”. She was able to have her mum Norma Harrison, who played a significant role in her entry into the art world and taught her how to draw, attend the naming event.

The sculpture weighs 300kgs and sits in the centre of the park’s pond.

Community members were able to suggest names for the sculpture to Baw Baw Shire, and a top six were selected and voted on.

The top three names, as voted by the public were; Corymbia Dreaming, Home Away From Home, and Sweet Nectar.

Ms Caminiti said ‘Corymbia Dreaming’ won by a single vote.

“It was great to see so many interested members of our community involved in the naming process, from submitting an entry, to voting, through to having community members present for the official announcement and celebrations,” said Baw Baw Shire mayor Michael Leaney.

“It highlights just how invested our residents are in shaping Baw Baw Shire now and into the future. Congratulations to the successful submission.”

The sculpture was worked on for four months before its installation. The artwork was the final part of council’s $1.48 million Civic Park upgrade project.
