Bunyip CFA celebrates 80 years
The Bunyip Fire Brigade recently celebrated 80 years of protecting the community with an event at Gumbuya World to mark the milestone.
The volunteer brigade, as part of the Country Fire Authority, has been a major part of the local Bunyip community, always ready to help in times of need.
The event, which included a three-course meal also was used as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of individual members of the brigade. Awards for service were given out, with some of the highlights including member John Beavis receiving a medal for 60 years of service, ex-captain John Cooper receiving a Brigade Life Membership and members Wayne Rinehart and Terry Noone receiving National Medals for 15 years of diligent service.
With esteemed company in attendance such as CFA South East region deputy chief officer Trevor Owen and Cardinia Shire councillor Graeme Moore the night was a great success for the brigade, which currently has 40 members. The brigade, as a part of District 8, is responsible for the largest areas in the region.
Over its 80 year-history, the brigade has attended more than 3100 calls, with more than 400 members having been a part of it at some point. They have assisted in major disasters throughout Victoria, including Ash Wednesday, Black Saturday and the 2019 Bunyip State Park fires, and has also been a major part of community programs throughout the area.
In a speech given on the night, brigade captain Jason Boler described his role as captain as "an honour," while he thanked every member for their service.
"What you guys do for this community is just amazing, and you should all be so very proud of yourselves," Boler said.
"The Aussie spirit is still alive and well whilst we have people like us in the world."
