- The Gazette, 20 February 1923 EARLY HISTORY OF WARRAGUL

At the recent meeting of the Warragul Shire Council a letter was received from Mr JD Reed, late Surveyor General, in reference to the council’s invitation to him to write a record of the early history of this part of Gippsland. The President said that some time ago the council had this matter before them and they decided to ask Mr Reed to come up and carry out this very desirable work. He was in possession of valuable early history of this district, and he had kindly accepted the council’s invitation - The engineer said Mr Reed had been invited some nine months ago, and he accepted it.

But unfortunately he hurt his knee at that time, and had been laid up ever since - Cr. Prime thought the idea a good one, and the shire should consider Mr Reed as its guest when he came up to look around. The President said he would call a public meeting at an early date to go into this matter as it was very desirable they should have something like an historical society, and Mr Reed would be invited tomorrow to ride over the district, and then address their meeting this morning.

FIRE

Two small “dongs” of the firebell were sufficient to startle many people on Wednesday evening when it was discovered that flames and smoke were seen issuing from the rear of the Commonwealth Bank. The brigade was quickly on the spot, and the outbreak subdued at once. No serious damage was done fortunately.

BAND QUEEN COMPETITION

At a public meeting called by the Warragul Brass Band on Monday night last week for the purposes of raising funds for the band, it was decided to organise a Queen Competition. A very successful effort of this nature was recently held by the Trafalgar Brass Band, by which over £200 was raised. This splendid result has inspired the Warragul bandsmen to go and do likewise. Mr Wright Pearson was elected President and Mesdames M. Gargan, C Gargan, Heuchan, and Messrs Pirara, Turner and Preece a committee to carry out the executive work. Mr A Preece was appointed secretary. It was decided to have three Queens, the titles being Queen of Sport, Queen of Railways and Queen of Friendly Societies.

The Band hoped by this effort to raise sufficient funds to get a few better instruments, repair others, and, if possible, obtain uniforms for members of the band.
