Strange country at Chairo

-

Chairo Christian School is celebrating 40 years since the school began in February 1983.

The first of a number of special events for the year will be a concert featuring Steve Messer’s Strange Country, in The Balfour, the theatre at the Drouin campus, on Saturday March 4 at 7pm.

Strange Country cooks the musical flavours of country, blues and gospel into an original uptown-downhome, pre-post-modern, rhythm ‘n’ bluegrass stew.

The band usually consists of Steve Messer, Steve Camp, Rod Boreham, Michael Stritch and Darryl Thompson.

Steve Messer and other band members have had close connections with the school over the years, with Steve having been a parent, board member and teacher.

“We are excited to have been invited to help kick off Chairo’s forty-year celebrations,” Messer said. “Performing on the big stage in The Balfour will be fantastic, and on this special occasion we’ll joined by old mates Garry Adams and Peter York”.For over thirty years, Strange Country has performed across Victoria and interstate, at concerts and festivals, in venues big and small, including many years appearing at the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

The band’s album Country Bazaar earned them finalist nominations at the Tamworth ‘TIARA’ awards and the Victorian Country Music Awards.

Strange Country has years of experience delighting audiences with lively musical and conversational interplay, and songs rich in stories about life’s joys and struggles, hard times, high hopes and the triumph of faith.
