Mixed results for Neerim

Neerim District’s division two team has bowed out of finals following an away semi final against Longwarry.

However, its division five and six teams recorded solid wins.

In the midweek competitio­n, Neerim District recorded a win in its final game of the season.

Division two: Neerim District lost to Longwarry 68/93

Peter Throup (skip), Pat Fraser-Aurisch, Ray Throup and Karren Sheers lost to Ken White’s team 13/30.

Longwarry bounced away to a 10/1 lead with the help of a six and were 15/4 after a four on the eighth end. Neerim hung on, maintainin­g the deficit to around 10 at the 12th end. However, Longwarry won five of the next six, including a four, to lead 30/9. Neerim won the last three ends to go down by 17 shots.

Peter Brooks (skip), Trevor Kuhnell, Rob Cook and Chris Hogan lost to Jason Leishout’s team 19/23.

Neerim dropped a two and four in the first two ends and soon trailed 3/11 on the 7th end. Neerim then its own two and four to trail by two on the ninth end. Longwarry kicked again to lead by six on the 13th end. Hanging tough, Neerim closed the gap with singles, but a four to Longwarry had the lead out to seven. Neerim came back to within two with two ends to go, but singles to Longwarry resulted in a four-shot loss.

Shane Hogan (skip), Ray Watts, Ross Pollard and Jim Fallon lost to Kenneth Towt’s team 16/21.

Neerim led early but dropped a four and a five to trail 4/10. A three and four to Neerim got them to within two, and another three on the 12th end had scores at 14-all. Only singles were scored over the last nine ends but they mainly went to Longwarry who won by five shots.

Neil Adams (skip), Angus McGillivra­y, John Rochford and Colin McKay defeated Adam Proctor’s team 20/19. The first four ends were close before Neerim won five ends in a row - including two threes - to lead 13/3 on the ninth end. Neerim extended its lead to 18/5 but Longwarry hit back with two threes and a four on consecutiv­e ends to trail by three on the 16th end. The last five ends were a tight struggle, with Neerim hanging on for the one-shot win.

Division five: Neerim District (2) defeated Trafalgar (3) 93/39

Playing at home, Neerim knew this game could go either way as both sides had recorded big wins against each other. However, it was Neerim’s turn on Saturday with a big 54shot win with all rinks up.

Jim Schroeder (skip), Julie Adams, Richard Kerr and Des Pelly defeated Paul Gridley’s team 25/21.

Neerim started well with a four to lead 9/4 on the sixth end. Trafalgar got going and a four on the 10th end had them leading 12/10. Neerim responded, winning the next seven ends to lead 25/12 on the 17th end. Trafalgar won the last four ends, including a couple of threes, but fell four shots short.

Mal Collins (skip), George Rymer, Tony Thornton and Bronwyn Throup defeated Bill Lithgow’s team 42/9.

Neerim started with a series of singles plus a three to lead 7/0 on the fifth end. Trafalgar got on the board with a single, only for Neerim to open the floodgates. They won the next five ends - including two fives and a four - to lead 25/1. Trafalgar won the next three ends but Neerim won six of the last seven - including a six - to run out 33-shot winners.

Russell Meehan (skip), Greg Bond, Gerry Engelstad and Terry Giffin defeated Tony Dawson’s team 26/9.

Neerim started strongly and led 11/2 on the seventh end. They continued to win ends, picking up mainly singles, and lead 19/4 on the 16th end. Trafalgar’s pain got worse with a six to Neerim on the 19th end. Trafalgar won the last two ends but it was Neerim by 17 shots.

Division six: Neerim District (3) defeated Boolarra (2) 50/27

Playing at home against Boolarra, Neerim had a solid win with both rinks up.

Fish Halligan (skip), Neville Cousins, Thelma Schroeder and Peter Nolan defeated Peter Gair’s team 22/17.

A six on the first end gave Neerim a great start and they led 12/4 by the eighth end. Boolara won eight ends in a row, including a four, to lead 16/12 on the 16th end. Neerim bounced back, winning five of the last six ends, to win by five shots.

Cookie Halligan (skip), Kay Cousins, Gerald Winter and Roger Till defeated Pam Allen’s team 28/10.

Boolara scored a single on the first end but then Neerim took control. They led 11/2 on the seventh end thanks to a three and five. They soon picked up another five to be 17/6 after the 12th end. Neerim then won six in a row to lead 28/6 on the 18th end. Boolara won the last three ends to give Neerim an 18shot win.

Midweek

After a horror start to the season, Neerim’s midweek team charged home and finished the year with a great win over Warragul.

With just one win after six rounds, things didn’t look good. But four wins and a draw followed to be within a whisker of beating the top side. They finished the season in sixth place.

Division two: Neerim District defeated Warragul (2) 76/48

Pat Fraser-Aurisch (skip), Gerry Engelstad, Di Tame and Bronwyn Throup defeated Margaret Keeffe’s team 24/15.

Neerim started well and led 11/4 by the 11th end. Warragul won four in a row to close within two, but Neerim kicked again. A six on the 18th end had the lead out to 10 and they went on for a nine-shot win.

Cookie Halligan (skip), Kay Cousins, Fish Halligan and Neville Cousin’s defeated Elsie Hefford’s team 27/16.

Neerim trailed 0/5 after two ends but recovered to win the next six and lead 9/5. A four and a two gave Warragul the lead before Neerim responded with a six. Neerim led by 10 on the 15th end and went on for an 11shot win.

Karren Sheers (skip), Joe Marino, Thelma Schroeder and Jim Schroeder defeated Glynis Mitchell’s team 25/17.

Neerim trailed 3/8 early but fought back. A four on the ninth end levelled the scores at 10-all. Neerim eased ahead, but a five to Warragul on the 15th end gave them the lead. However, Warragul wouldn’t scpre again, as Neerim won the last six ends - including a four - to win by eight shots.
