Trafalgar into grand final

Recovering from last week’s scare against Yarragon, Trafalgar’s division four team progressed straight through to the grand final.

Trafalgar was up against Yarragon for the second consecutiv­e week, getting the win by just three shots.

In the other semi final featuring Trafalgar, the division five team was outplayed by Neerim District.

Division four: Trafalgar (2) 14/78 defeated Yarragon (1) 4/75

Derek Jones, Lawrence Heenan, Ian Riley and Tony Mitchinson (skip) lost 20/21. Tony’s rink was away early with a two threes and a four to be 13/4 on the eighth. Yarragon won six of the next seven ends and tied the score at 15-all. On the 18th, it was level again at 18all. Trafalgar got the next two ends and, with one end to go, led 20/18. Yarragon pulled off a three to win the rink by one.

Alex Brodie, Peter Rosenboom, Graham Hill and Frank Farrugia (skip) won 21/11. Frank’s rink got off to a good start to be 4/0 on the third and 11/4 by the 11th. Yarragon, with a four on the 16th got back within one shot. But, Trafalgar powered home - outscoring Yarragon 9/0 on the last five ends - to win by 10.

Anthony Dalgleish, Danny Bryant, Helen Robertson and Bruce Giles (skip) lost 16/28. Bruce’s rink led 9-3 by the 10th end and a five on the 11th helped stretch it out to 15/6 on the 12th. Yarragon won the next eight ends, including a seven on the 13th, to win by 12 shots.

Terry Robertson, Bernie Detering, Peter Watson and Mal Clymo (skip) won 21/15. Mal’s rink, with a five on the third end, led 6/1. Yarragon kept picking away to be 13-all on the 17th. However, Trafalgar, with a three and five in the last four ends, won by six.

Division five: Trafalgar (3) 0/39 lost to Neerim District (2) 16/93

Kyen Jenkins, Russell Lavell, Peter Dart and Tony Dawson (skip) lost 9/26. Tony’s rink led 2/1 on the second, but that’s where it ended. Neerim answered with 10/0, leaving Trafalgar trailing 2/11 on the seventh and 4/19 on the 16th. Although Trafalgar won the last two, a six to Neerim on the 19th put the margin at 17.

George Ward, Travis Jenkins, Ed Davies and Bill Lithgow (skip) lost 9/42. Bill’s rink struggled all day with the windy conditions and quick green. Neerim only conceded four ends on the way to a large win.

Sean Tatterson, Rob Connell, Sue Robinson, Paul Gridley (skip) lost 21/25. Paul’s rink kept close to Neerim early and, with a four on the 10th, hit the lead 12/10. With some extra good bowling by Neerim’s skipper, they won the next seven ends to outscore Trafalgar 15/0. Trailing 12/25, Trafalgar came back in the last four ends with nine points to reduce the margin to four.

Midweek Trafalgar’s top midweek team will be contesting the division one second semi final at Traralgon today.

Trafalgar secured fourth place despite a final round loss to second placed Drouin.

Division one: Trafalgar (1) 0/38 lost to Drouin 16/77

Col Carmichael, Coral Saunders, Ken Capper and Helen Robertson (skip) lost 11/26. Helen’s rink was down 11 shots by the fifth before outscoring Drouin to reduce the margin to 7/12 on the 10th. However, Drouin halted the comeback, adding 14 shots to Trafalgar’s four over the remaining ends.

Pat Tatterson, Peter Watson, Tim Anderson and Heather Taylor (skip) lost 10/23. Heather’s rink had a slow start, conceding a four on the first end. Trafalgar fought to get back in the game, getting to 3/5 on the fifth, but that’s where it ended. Drouin had an answer for all of Trafalgar’s efforts and, despite a mini comeback on the last two ends, Trafalgar lost by 13.

Frank Farrugia, Shirley Melsen, Paul Dawson and Sue Robinson (skip) lost 17/28. Sue’s rink jumped out to a 5/0 lead before Drouin replied with two fours and a five. Having trailed 7/13 on the eighth end, Trafalgar slowly pulled back the deficit to 16-all on the 16th. But, Drouin again put the foot down to outscore Trafalgar 12/1 over the last five ends.

Division three: Trafalgar (2) 2/44 lost to Morwell (6) 14/66

Rena Spark, Peter Dart, Tony Mitchinson and Lyn Sephton (skip) lost 11/23. After a slow start, Lyn’s rink fought back to be 9/11 on the 12th end. However, Morwell outscored Trafalgar 12/2 over the last nine ends.

Helen Brodie, Bill Lithgow, Peter Rosenboom and Margaret Moss (skip) won 19/13. Margaret’s rink got away early and were never headed, winning 19/13. This saw them awarded “rink of the week”.

Rob Connell, Lyn Hill, Tony Dawson and Joanna Reekie (skip) lost 14/30. Joanna’s rink, down 0/8 after three ends, managed to keep pace with Morwell and were only seven shots down by the 11th. Unfortunat­ely, that was as close as it got. They were outscored 5/14 over the remaining ends.

Division four: Trafalgar (3) 0/24 lost to Yinnar (2) 10/45

Bev Webb, Noel Moreland, Ed Davies and Debra Beary (skip) lost 15/17. Deborah’s rink was in a tough battle with Yinnar all day, with scores level on three occasions - eightall on the ninth,12-all on the 16th and 14-all on the 17th. Yinnar then scored three singles, leaving Trafalgar needing a four on the last. They only managed one shot to go down by two shots.

Graeme Ralls, Gillian Creighton, George Ward and Mandy Miles (skip) lost 9/28. Mandy’s rink was two-all at the fifth but Yinnar scored 20 shots to two over the next eight ends - including two fives and a six - to leave Trafalgar trailing 4/22. Trafalgar matched Yinnar for the rest of the game, but the deficit was all too much.
