Locals star in State Fours
Four locals faced off in the Strzelecki North Region State Fours women’s final held at Drouin recently.
Neerim District duo Pat Fraser-Aurisch and Karren Sheers paired with Traralgon’s Rosemary Lorenz and Dianne Richards to win the exciting final over Drouin duo Sheryl Atkinson and Samantha Atkinson, Leongatha’s Jenny Miller and Traralgon’s Angela Hackett.
The final score was 16/15. Sheryl Atkinson’s team looked in control at 10/0 early in the game. However, Pat’s team fought back. When Sheryl drove the jack into the ditch to score two shots, the game was tied at 15-all after 15 ends.
Pat’s team won the extra end by one shot to take the title.
In the Strzelecki South Region State Fours men’s final, a West Gippsland-based quartet took out the final with a big 19/6 win.
Trafalgar’s Matt Schreyer, Warragul’s Noel Rubenstein and Longwarry’s Adam Proctor and Robert Proctor took out the title over an Inverloch team.
Both winning teams will play in the Strzelecki Bowls Region State play-off event at Wonthaggi this Sunday.
The men’s fours final will start at 9.30am, Drouin’s Sheryl Atkinson will play in the women’s champion of champion singles at 9.30am and the women’s fours final will be at 12.30pm. The women’s state triples will also play at 12.30pm featuring Drouin’s Sheryl Atkinson, Samantha Atkinson and Maureen Leighton.
Two Trafalgar players and one Drouin player have also been selected to join the Strzeleck North trails over the coming weeks.
Wayne Arnold and Tim Fraser of Trafalgar, together with Mark Atkinson of Drouin, will take part. A team of 12 will be selected to play Foster on Sunday, March 19 from which a team of 12 will play Gippsland in May and the state region championship in Moama in May.
