CASEY VOSS STILL HOPING TO MAKE AFL LEAP AFTER GARNERING INTEREST LAST SEASON

- BY LACHLAN GELEIT

Sturt defender Casey Voss still has hopes of playing AFL despite missing out on last year’s Mid-Season rookie draft.

Voss, the son of Carlton coach and Brisbane legend Michael, was considered a likely prospect to be taken midway through last season after starring for Sturt in the SANFL.

After winning the best afield medal for the SANFL representative side against a WAFL representative side in Perth, many suggested Voss would earn a chance but ultimately, he was passed up on and remained at The Double Blues.

Upon resuming in the South Australian state league, Voss finished equal-third in the Magarey Medal, a stunning effort for a half-back flanker.

Voss says he simply hopes to keep improving in 2023 after making progression in recent seasons.

“It’s just to probably have a consistent year, I don’t want to put too many expectations on myself,” Voss told Sportsday SA about his goals for this year.

“Over the last two or three years I’ve been slowly improving and it’s just trying to continue to do the things I do well. “I just want to slightly improve the things that I’m not as good as and bring it up the level that I’m an even better player.”

Voss says one thing that will be front of mind is continuing to aspire to reach the top level.

“It’s always the goal to play at the highest level you can,” Voss said.

“Obviously, that’s the AFL so moving to that level and playing at the highest level is always going to be a goal of mine.

“I’ll always aspire to get to that level.” Despite winning the Fos Williams Medal for best afield in the state game, Voss says interest in him from AFL clubs hasn’t increased but he still considers his time with the SA team as “memorable”.

“Not too much, it was just the same as normal,” Voss said,.

“There wasn’t too much added interest, I just wanted to keep enjoying playing the footy I was playing with Sturt.

“It was amazing though, just to travel and go to Perth … pulling on the SA jumper was really memorable.”

The 22-year-old will hope to lead Sturt to another finals finish in 2023 after finishing last season in fifth place.
