Bombers to welcome superstar
Nilma-Darnum will have an ex-AFL superstar run out in the red and black for a one-off appearance later this season after being selected to participate in the Carlton Draft.
The draft, now in its second instalment, will see six ex-AFL legends play for local clubs that are experiencing difficult times.
Clubs from around the state can apply for a selection in the draft, which will be televised on Fox Footy later this month, with Nilma-Darnum being one of the six successful clubs chosen.
The players on offer are Nathan Buckley (280 games for Brisbane Bears and Collingwood), Jordan Lewis (319 games for Hawthorn and Melbourne), Bernie Vince (229 games for Adelaide and Melbourne), Kane Cornes (300 games for Port Adelaide), Josh P. Kennedy (290 games for Hawthorn and Sydney) and David Mundy (276 games).
The order of selection will be determined at a later date.
Nilma-Darnum football manager Joel Wishart said to have a former-AFL superstar play a game for the Bombers "means the world" to the club.
"It's one thing to watch your heroes on TV, however being able to experience them in the flesh will be huge. Our junior netball and football sides will be beside themselves," he said.
Wishart emphasised the club would be using the opportunity to build for the future, and in particular getting an under 18s side for next season.
"It's going to highlight what a great club we are and what a small community can achieve with the right values. Our community is small but important," he said.
"People rely on community and reliability which we provide, and a great social aspect with our football club to get behind and support as their own."
Should they be given pick one, Wishart said Buckley and Kennedy were at the top of the club's wishlist.
"Our values are about the small things and one per centers so these two guys epitomise what we stand for and would gel the group the right way."
