Brahms’ anniversary celebrated
German composer Johannes Brahms' 190th anniversary will be celebrated next weekend at the Wesley of Warragul.
Violinist Susan Pierotti, cellist Zoe Knighton and pianist Brian Chapman will present "All Brahms Chamber Recital", featuring Sonata No.1 in G major for Violin and Piano, Op.78, Sonata No.1 in E minor for Cello and Piano, Op.38, and Trio No.1 in B major for Piano, Violin and Cello, Op.8.
Susan Pierotti is an accomplished Australian violinist who began learning violin at six years old. Pierotti's career has included symphony orchestras, opera, ballet, chamber music, teaching, theatre, film, recordings, live broadcasts, radio, television, reviewing and adjudicating.
She has also been involved in commissioning, performing and recording contemporary music.
Zoe Knighton is the founding cellist of the Flinders Quartet, and started cello at nine years old. She attended the University of Melbourne and has studied with Christian Wojtowicz, Michel Strauss, Nelson Cooke, and Angela Sargeant.
Brian Chapman studied in Brisbane with Nora Baird and in Melbourne with Lindsay Biggins, J.A. Steele and Roy Shepherd. He has made more than 100 ABC studio recordings and broadcasts and has released several CD recordings.
Sonata in G major is often called the Regenlied Sonata as it features the theme of the Regenlieder Op.59. The Regenlied
theme has been connected with Brahms's feelings for Clara Schumann at a time of the latter's suffering multiple family misfortunes.
The first two movements of the E minor Cello Sonata were composed at Münster am Stein in 1862, and the finale at Lichtenthal in 1865. The first public performance took place in Vienna as late as February 1874.
The final piece to be presented in the anniversary concert is Trio No.1 in B major as composed by Brahm in 1891.
The "All Brahms Chamber Recital" will appear at the Wesley of Warragul on Saturday, April 29 at 7.30pm.
