Gulls return home

-

Club legend Jaime Rollinson celebrating her 300th game was the highlight from the Warragul courts on Saturday.

Playing their first game at Western Park for several years, the Gulls had a strong win in the 17s and narrowly missed a win in C grade.

A grade: Warragul 50 lost to Moe 62

Taking the court with pride, the Gulls expected a tough game against Moe.

With a slightly slow start, Warragul was left to trail 11-17. At the quarter time break, coach Kim Weller gave everyone a role to play and things to work on.

The Gulls stayed with Moe in the second quarter, only losing the quarter by a goal. They were led by outstanding performances by Jaimie “JP” Rollinson and Kate Emmerson who both stepped up and made a huge impact.

The team kept building in the third quarter and came off at the last break with their heads held high, having won that quarter by a goal.

Overall, the score margin didn’t reflect how the Gulls played. This new A grade team will keep getting better every week.

B grade: Warragul 44 lost to Moe 63

Bella Hefford stepped up from C grade on Saturday, taking control of the goal ring and keeping the Gulls in the game.

Despite defender Mackenzie Minichiello giving everything she had to keep the ball out of Moe’s goal ring, it just wasn’t Warragul’s day.

Awards: Bella Hefford and Mackenzie Minichello.

C grade: Warragul 26 lost to Moe 28

The second round of the season was a tough fought battle, with the Gulls missing out on the win by just two goals.

Warragul’s defence worked seamlessly thanks to the chat and leadership from Cindy Dawson.

The Gulls had pressure all the way down the court, with the attack end causing multiple turnovers, led by the industrious Bridie Mulqueen in centre.

It was an amazing team effort from all nine players.

17 and under: Warragul 31 defeated Moe 21

Warragul welcomed Moe and it was goal-for-goal early on.

However, Warragul stepped up the intensity in the third quarter to score 15 goals to Moe’s three.

Warragul’s attack worked tirelessly through Mackenzie Heenan and Lainey Gowans into Hannah Davis.

Although, the girls dropped intensity in the last quarter, their efforts early on paid off, and they got away with a 10-goal win.

Awards: Lainey Gowans and Chloe Jinks.

15 and under: Warragul 23 lost to Moe 27

This was a close game, with the Gulls displaying tight defensive skills and strength in and around the goals.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t a win for the Gulls, but spectators were treated to a very competitive match.

This team certainly shows great potential for the season ahead.

Awards: Olivia Barr and Audrey Simpson.

13 and under: Warragul 8 lost to Moe 58

Playing on Thursday night, this was a tough game in which the Gulls didn’t give up.

Best on court was Finlay Heenan. Finlay was an absolute superstar in goal defence and goal keeper, taking multiple intercepts every quarter.

The other award winner was Taya Watson for her incredible speed, energy and passes in centre and goal attack.

The teamwork and encouragement between the girls keep a smile on all their faces, despite the final score.
