Magpies quell Crows

-

POOWONG scored an upset of sorts, finishing strongest to overcome its more fancied opponent Longwarry.

The Magpies bookended the performance with a good first quarter helping them to victory, 9-14 (68) to 7-13 (55).

Poowong made the stronger start, taking a 13-point lead into the first change before the Crows responded through the middle periods.

Narrowing the margin to just one-point in a low scoring affair to half time, the match opened up somewhat in the third term.

Each side booted three goals, giving the Crows a narrow four-point lead at the final change to set up an enthralling finish to the contest.

It would be the Magpies to hold firm against the odds, booting three goals to one in the final term to pinch the result.

Leading the way for the visitors were Steven McInnes, Jack Hazendonk, Rory Pattison, Alex Henshall, Conor Cunningham and Mitchell van't Hof.

Angus Adamiak, Cooper Brown, Liam Kirkman, Brayden Chandler, Troy Lehman and Ben Cuckson helped keep the Crows in the contest.

CATANI put in another spirited effort, but still went down to Yarragon 6-15 (51) to 4-8 (32). Given Yarragon comfortably accounted for Catani last time they met, the Blues took plenty away from a contest that further demonstrated their improvement.

The Panthers were able to build on their seven-point quarter time lead, keeping the Blues goalless across the second and third terms to kick away to a 34-point buffer at the final change.

Catani would kick the final two goals of the contest to bridge the gap slightly, but the Panthers had done enough.

Setting up the match winning lead for Yarragon were Lachie Devine, Tyler Payroli, Lachlan Shaw, Taylor Rainey, Devin Pollock and Joshawa Vosper.

Leading another competitive effort from the Blues were Cody Banbury, Tom Carpenter, Adam Splatt, Cody Fleming and Michael Ralph.

TRAFALGAR shook off a determined Nyora, with a strong second half helping the Bloods to a comfortable win, 12-4 (76) to 7-6 (48).

An even second term of four goals apiece saw the Saints head into the long break in touch, just 10-points adrift.

The likes of Jack Rosenow, Joshua Ryan, Travis Stewart, Jordan Anderson, Adam Pugh and Finlay Cousins ensuring Nyora mounted an early challenge.

Trafalgar lifted in the second half, booting four goals to one, including the only goal in a torrid final term.

Matthew Swenson, Hardy Kenny, Jace Butler, Mitch Virtue, Jayden Thomas and Grady McMahon helped the Bloods lock away the result.
