Hawks demonstrate development

-

The Hawks' backline was forced to work hard again on Sunday when they faced up against the Moe Newborough Allies.

While the final score was 31-1, in the Allies' favour, it was a significantly better result for the fresh-faced Hawks than weeks prior and gave them the opportunity to show off their stellar defensive skills.

While the Allies got a good start with a couple of goals in the first quarter, the Hawks managed to keep their goals to a minimum for the remainder of the game.

Chevelle Mason was a standout in the backline, repeatedly beating her opponent to the ball and forcing turnovers, driving the ball back into the midfield.

In the ruck, Cait van Dord delivered a strong performance, consistently winning contests and hit outs.

The second and third quarters saw the Hawks backline work hard and fast to squash the Allies' shots at goal and their forwards got a few touches - ultimately scoring one point.

Wings Aisling Winterbotham and Olivia Douglas worked well with the midfielders to bring the ball down into their forward 50, but the Allies' backline was just too strong and turnovers were imminent.

Despite facing another loss, the Hawks appeared to remain positive after the match, having showed some great signs of improvement from their first game just two weeks prior. Their ball skills have notably improved, as has the talk on the field and teamwork.

Together, the group proved they can take just as many knocks as they can give.

Drouin's best on were Olivia Douglas, Jade Snelling, Emmah Guastella, Chevelle Mason and Madeline Hart-Fisher.

Next week the Hawks will face up against Lindenow South at Lindenow South Recreation Reserve on Sunday, May 21 from 2pm.

The following week they will finally return to the Hawks Nest to play Moe Newborough Allies again.
