Hawks just fall short

Drouin netballers won two of the three senior games against Sale in round six - falling just four goals short in A grade.

A grade: Drouin 38 lost to Sale 42 It was a disappoint­ing loss for the A grade girls to Sale. However, the game created lots of learning opportunit­ies for the team to take away and work on.

Defensivel­y, the Hawks showed what a fierce unit they are. They built pressure down the court to allow flying Kym Diston to come out and attack the ball.

In attack, the Hawks are continuing to develop their connection­s, no matter what combinatio­n of players are on the court, sticking to structures and playing the Hawks brand of netball.

It all came together in the last five minutes, bringing an 11-goal deficit to within three. It was a great fight and finish to the game.

B grade: Drouin 47 defeated Sale 23

The Hawks came through with another brilliant win, placing them back in the top five.

The midcourt are starting to combine well, using ball speed, depth down the court and angles on the circle edge to create easy feeding opportunit­ies into the goalers.

Holly Cheyne had a great game in wing attack for all these reasons. Tess Mapleson came into the side from C grade and was strong in her holds and confident to the post, combining well with Jodie Buckingham and Kylie Proctor.

The rolling subs transition­ed onto the court seamlessly, providing extra speed and ball pressure.

C grade: Drouin 41 defeated Sale 24

A great win by the girls set up by tight one-on-one defence from everyone on the court. They were able to keep the court open with fast breaks and strong drives down the court.

Jess Murray and Allanah Jagoe combined well to create lots of turnovers in all four quarters. Kate Butler combined well with Taylah Roberts and Emily Bethune rolling through wing attack.

Zali Metcalfe showed off her pace and accurate goaling, working with both Tess Mapleson and Kaylee Nalder. It was great to see the team working together.

17 and under: Drouin 18 lost to Sale 39

Coming up against last year’s grand finalists, the Hawks were in a hard fought game.

The defenders did an amazing job, creating lots of opportunit­ies. Unfortunat­ely, the girls weren’t able to capitalise of them due to Sale’s strong defensive line-up.

Matilda Carroll worked her player all game and was pivotal in bringing the ball out of defence.

Jamieson Thomas had her best game of the season, creating play in wing attack and some great one-onone pressure in wing defence too.

15 and under: Drouin 14 lost to Sale 68

The Hawks faced another strong opposition in Sale, showing fighting spirit for the whole four quarters. This resulted in some great passages of play.

Leilani Lightowler returned to the court after doing her ACL last year, and it was like she hadn’t missed a game. Her strong drives gave the team plenty of options down the court and her defence was incredible to watch.

Beth Murray was hunting countless balls out of the circle as goal keeper, giving her team plenty of opportunit­ies to score.

The attack end finished the game strong, showing off their hard work and effort at training.

13 and under: Drouin 9 lost to Sale 56

The young Hawks started off slow, allowing Sale to get an early run in the first quarter.

With a better second quarter, Drouin showed off great skill and teamwork - but Sale were too good on the day.

The girls kept fighting until the end of the game, with lots of positive to take away from the court.

Amarlee Brown showed confidence in her drives in the attack end and in the goal ring as well. Whilst at the other end, Dillon Jagoe worked hard all game in goal defence to create turnovers and rebounded strongly.
