Baw Baw Singers

-

Baw Baw Singers enjoyed a successful performance at Fairview on Sunday, June 4. It is wonderful to see the audience tap their feet, clap and sing along with the old-time songs. Both the choir and the audience gain great satisfaction from these events.

This month singers have really enjoyed some terrific songs. The slick, groovy “Green Door,” old jazz favourite, “And All That Jazz” and one published in 1884 which is still loved by all, “Just a Song at Twilight.”

The new song for the month is “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” from the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Although classed as a new song for singers, most are familiar with the music and the lyrics and this makes the evening relaxing and enjoyable. About 15 songs are sung each evening.

Members have welcomed six new people over the past two weeks. All newcomers are very welcome. There are no auditions and lyrics are available.

Suppertime Showcase is always interesting and varied. Taleigha and Joshua, two of the youngest singers sang a duet, “I Want It That Way,” a song made popular by the Backstreet Boys. They did a great job.

Marg Young read a few stories written by her mother. One was about meeting Miss Australia in 1927 when she was 5 years old. Wonderful, recorded, historical stories. Thanks to Marg for sharing these stories.

Baw Baw Singers meet in the Drouin Anglican Church Hall on Monday evenings from 7pm to 9pm. For more information contact Sue on 0439 401 385

Strzelecki Bushwalking Club

The Strzelecki Bushwalking Club is an active and dynamic group based in central Gippsland.

The club has about 160 members mainly living between Drouin and Traralgon. Each month the club offers many activities in the great outdoors, and which are suitable for various fitness levels.

Leaders are experienced walkers and do everything in their power to ensure that each activity is enjoyable for all.

Each month we hold a social meeting at the Trafalgar Scout Hall where interested people are welcome to attend and introduce themselves to the club. The guest speaker on June 14 was Peter Ware, a field naturalist and photographer who presented on Gippsland’s flora, fungi, and fauna.

Once again June has a diverse and bumper program on offer. A group travelled to Mornington Peninsula on June 11 to explore Green’s Bush which is the largest area of bushland left in that region.

On June 17 the will host a bike ride on the South Gippsland Rail Trail between Leongatha and Korumburra. This is about 30 km return trip. Korumburra is a lovely place to break the ride as there are a multitude of yummy lunch options for the riders.

Towards the end of June Adrian will be leading a walk along the east Tyers trail. This will be about 9km and walkers will see some lovely, lush bushland (including leeches) and many artefacts of old logging sites. This provides you with an interesting perspective into past economic operations that took place within Gippsland.
