At the beginning, the focus was on garment finishing. The efficient introduction of lasers, ozone and nanotechnology made big improvements in sustainability. However, innovations quickly started spreading to all the other segments of denim production, starting with farming, moving to new fibers like Tencel and hemp, and including impressive innovations in our approach to creating the indigo dye and the way we dye the warps. Ultimately, the most important thing is this new sense of responsibility in the denim industry, which is very promising, and the big changes that have taken place between 2005 and today.
Covid-19 has hugely accelerated a process that started years ago. Digitalization in design is changing the way we have been working in the past. We can design and develop the product digitally. The goal is to design in 3D. From there we make patterns, we choose fabrics remotely, and we create virtual washes and samples that we bring to virtual showrooms where consumers can buy directly. This process is a revolution that allows us to save a huge amount of time and money but also has a tremendous impact in terms of sustainability. The bottom line is that we need to rethink and reinvent our work in order to contribute in a radical way to a world with zero emissions.
Creativity, for sure. Technology and innovation are just amazing tools that allow us to make new products that are ready for the actual changes in life.
