Market manager lauded

Weekend Courier - - News -

HAVING dedicated much of his life to volunteering, Safety Bay resident Peter Phillips was humbled to be recognised for his work recently.

He was awarded the Senior Community Citizen of the Year award for Rockingham for his dedication and organisation of the Sunday Market run by the Rotary Club of Rockingham.

Mr Phillips has been a Rotarian for more than 31 years and has lived in Rockingham for the past 20 years after being a farmer in Kojonup.

He has voluntarily managed it for 10 years and during that time it has raised more than $1.25 million, with most of the money being returned to the local community.

Managing the market involves taking and recording bookings, about 60 phone calls a week, organising rosters, attending the market each Sunday and resolving the odd dispute.

“I was pretty surprised to get the award; I don’t usually like a fuss but it was nice to get the recognition,” he said.

“We have had a good life and I think everybody should put something back to the community.”

Without his contribution to the market, the club would have had to pay a manager, reducing money that could be given to help the various community projects the club could help.

The market is an attraction that is enjoyed by both locals and tourists.

The Twilight Markets are his idea and they run in December.

He said money from the market had gone to fund some big community projects including a commercial kitchen and new bus for the Salvation Army in Cooloongup and a new shed for the Rockingham Volunteer Sea Rescue group.

“It’s not just me; there are three other Rotarians rostered on to help with the markets,” he said.

“My wife Beth has been a big part of it too and I could not have done it without her.”

Mr Phillips was presented the award on Australia Day at a ceremony hosted by the City of Rockingham.muni d478834
