MERMAID Beach has taken back the crown from Hope Island, recording the biggest sale of 2018.

Billionaire Clive Palmer holds the top spot after he splashed $12 million on a beach house at 9 Hedges Ave.

It has a raft of luxury features including a boxing ring, fully airconditioned gym, 22m lap pool and direct beach access. The 64year-old businessman bought the home from developer John Potter. He signed up for the four-level Hamptons-style residence after a 20-minute inspection.

Tony Velissariou, of Tony V Real estate, handled the sale.

Coming in at number two was another Hedges Ave mansion. The home, at 103-105 Hedges Ave, was bought by an interstate buyer for $11.6 million.

The sale was achieved by Kollosche Prestige Agents principal Michael Kollosche and Prestige Property’s Harry Kakavas in April. In third spot is another mega mansion, this time on the Sovereign Islands.

Amir Mian, principal of Prestige Property Agents, confirmed the sale of ‘Grande Vista’ on the Sovereign Islands for $11.05 million.

The property now holds the sales record on the Sovereign Islands — the record was previously held by Baltimore, a mega mansion that changed hands for $11 million in 2006.

The sale of a palatial Surfers Paradise penthouse for $9.5 million came in at fourth place while a riverfront mansion in the Bundall locale of Sorrento rounds out the top five after changing hands for $9 million.

In 2017 the top sale was a Hope Island property that sold for $16.75 million
