Sur Kirra: an ode to Sixties surfing culture

A new tower mirroring the design of the longboard will soon rise on the beachfront at one of the country’s most famous surfing spots

KIRRA’S surfing culture of the 1960s has been the inspiration for a new boutique tower set to rise along the suburb’s beachfront.

Cru Collective is soon to launch Sur Kirra Beach, a collection of 10 ultra-luxurious, fullfloor apartments rising to 13 levels at the corner of Musgrave and Winston streets.

Topping the elliptical-shaped tower, which mirrors design elements of the longboards that established the Kirra surfing culture, will be an exclusive two-storey penthouse. The site allows for a distinct floor plan that is fin-like in shape, with BDA Architecture capitalising on the potential to capture views from every angle of the building.

Facing one of the country’s most famous strips of sand and surf, Sur is the latest in a string of developments trying to fulfil demand for luxury sky homes along the Gold Coast and will be the new entry statement to the Kirra esplanade.

Acquired with an existing development approval in place, the original plans for the 635sq m site have been refined and include a reduction in the number of storeys and apartments which will cover 300sq m of floor space. Most will include three bedrooms with ensuites, a master wing, two living areas, a butler’s pantry, wine cellar and dry bar, storage space and secure lift access.

North-facing balconies will take in views stretching from Rainbow Bay to Stradbroke Island and the city’s hinterland backdrop.

Prices for the apartments start at $4m, with the penthouse price yet to be determined.

Cru Collective managing director Chris Bolger said its design approach was to create exceptional living spaces in extraordinary locations.

“By reducing the volume of apartments and raising ceiling heights of the original plans for the Kirra site we will deliver spaciousness and opulence that is typically reserved for high-end standalone homes,” Mr Bolger said.

An entire floor of the tower will be given over to resident amenities such as an oceanfront pool, fitness centre and sauna.

Mr Bolger said since acquiring the site Cru Collective had received an astounding amount of local and national interest.

Construction on the project is set to start in early 2022 — 60 years after the establishment of the Kirra Surfriders Club, home of the original “Cooly 3” and surfing greats, Michael Peterson, Peter Townend and Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew.

Cru Collective is currently delivering a pipeline of more than $150m-worth of projects along the Gold Coast with Sur following the recent sell-out of its $40m project called Siarn in Palm Beach.
