A sky high slice of heaven

Peace, privacy and panoramic ocean views are the ultimate luxury in this Bilinga penthouse where you can retreat, entertain and lap up all of the benefits of a beachfront lifestyle

- WORDS JANELLE ESTREICH

YOU could travel a long way to find a more mesmerising vista than the sweeping Pacific Ocean outlook on offer from atop boutique beachfront building Kirra Wave.

From the iconic outline of Surfers Paradise to the north, the eye travels down the coastline to world-class beaches from Kirra to Coolangatta, and west to the khaki haze of the hills behind the city.

Directly out front, a handful of beachgoers dot the sand, wet skin glistening in the sun as they emerge from the safety of the red and yellow flags.

Former Sydney business owner Laurence Gormley fell in love with Bilinga well before he and his partner Michael decided to make the laid back seaside strip home in 2016.

“We used to come up from Sydney for holidays and I’d say to Michael, ‘I think I want to retire here,’” said Mr Gormley. “It’s a great location, it’s got wonderful views, it’s like heaven really.”

While the popularity of southern Gold Coast beachside suburbs has exploded in the past 12 months, Bilinga has retained much of its sleepy village charm.

“When we first arrived we would say to everyone, ‘It’s just so beautiful and quiet,’” said Mr Gormley. “The locals would all agree, but then tell us not to tell anyone!”

And when you’re ready for a little action, you don’t have to go too far to find it. Kirra Wave sits between Tugun and Coolangatta, offering easy access to an enviable array of beautiful white sandy beaches, top notch restaurants, cafes, shops and services.

You can walk to Gold Coast Airport or shoot out to the M1 to travel south to Byron Bay in 45 minutes or north to Brisbane. But for all of the attractions at your fingertips, there are plenty of reasons not to rush out the door of penthouse 801.

Architectural in style, the three-level apartment has been stylishly refurbished with high end finishes and fixtures to complement a considered 349 sqm floor plan.

Open plan living, dining and kitchen on the main level flow onto an expansive northeast facing ocea nview balcony, while a spa on the entertaining deck is the ultimate spot to watch the sun set behind the hills.

The lower level features two bedrooms, a study and two covered balconies, each capturing yet more sublime ocean and hinterland views.

The rooftop terrace takes entertaining to another level, boasting a built-in BBQ kitchen, fireplace and a high social bar offering front row seats to an infinite blue canvas. “You could easily host 200 people here for a party and serve food on three levels, indoors and out,” said Mr Gormley.

But when family and friends move on, total peace and privacy are the ultimate luxuries.

“Something I love even more than watching the ocean is hearing it,” said Mr Gormley. “You really do get the feel of the weather all around you here. While the sun is lovely, of course, it’s something else to watch the lightning crackle over the ocean.”
