Auction weekend bonanza

The biggest auction weekend of the year is upon us and there are some big properties going under the hammer

- LISA HUGHES

JANUARY is always a busy time for real estate as agencies prepare for what has become the biggest weekend on the Gold Coast’s auction calendar.

Lucy Cole prestige kicks things off with its Alfresco auction in-rooms at its offices at ‘The Wave’ building in Broadbeach from 10.30am.

Principal Lucy Cole said 16 properties were set to go under the hammer but the strength of the market has led to 50 per cent of the properties to be sold ahead of the event.

“Local buyers have been the main ones pouncing on properties, but there are still some really good properties available, including apartments, to golf frontage and acreage homes,” Ms Cole said.

The activity continues into the evening when Amir Prestige starts selling off a roll-call of luxury properties from 5pm at its Grand Auction event at the JW Marriott, Surfers Paradise.

There are 21 properties on the auction list but Amir Prestige principal Amir Mian said about 20 per cent had sold pre the event generating more than $32 million.

There are still some big hitters to keep an eye on, however, including the iconic Sorrento estate known as Bartinon.

Built for Sir Justin and Lady Hickey in the early 1980s, the Mediterraneaninspired mansion at 26 Marseille Court, has hosted stars such as Frank Sinatra and the Rolling Stones.

Other properties to watch include the lavish six-bedroom mansion at 5681 Anchorage Terrace in Sanctuary Cove, a sprawling estate at 8 Jutland St, Currumbin Waters, where prices have soared over the past 12 months, and a single-story city oasis at 39 Beverley Cst, Broadbeach Waters.

Mr Mian said he was confident that many of the properties would sell at auction as all of them had attracted interest from buyers despite Covid affecting inspections.

Today’s events precede what is the biggest auction in the southern hemisphere taking place tomorrow. The Event by Ray White Surfers Paradise Group has more than 140 properties going under the hammer at the Royal Pines Resort in Benowa from 10am.

The line-up of listings is diverse and ranges from family homes, to apartments, to commercial buildings, with a select handful of prestige properties being sold at a separate event at the Grand Sheraton Mirage in Main Beach from 6pm on Friday, January 28.

Andrew Bell, principal of Ray White Surfers Paradise and long-time auctioneer, said the ease of The Event – with so many properties available on one day in one location – combined with the format has been a key factor in its success.

“The beauty of an auction is it tends to weed out unrealistic sellers, or those who are just testing the market,” he said

“Many buyers feel that auctions are up front and transparent – it’s out in the open. You can see what is going on in real time. When the hammer comes down that deal is done.”
