Weekend Gold Coast Bulletin - Property

Modern, safe and serene

It may be almost a decade old but the looks of this waterfront home would rival any luxury new-build, and its quality build ensures it will be around for years to come

- WORDS: LISA HUGHES

YOU know a house is truly timeless when its appearance entirely belies its age, as is the case with this waterfront property in a gated estate in Helensvale.

Its owners, Brian and Mary Berney, bought the house in Serenity Shores – one of seven communities within a precinct known as Oyster Cove – in 2013 after it had been put out to tender by the estate’s then developer.

The property was one of three BDA Architect-designed homes built to accommodate executives of the estate’s development company when they were visiting from Asia.

With this in mind, the build was carried out to the highest of standards with only quality materials used and high-end features included as standard.

“As it turned out the developer sold out of the project, so the three houses were put on the market,” Brian said.

“We had just returned from the Dominican Republic and were looking for a base here on the Gold Coast. We saw this and recognised the potential.

“It had never been lived in but was fully furnished and that is how we bought it. The market was really low at the time so we were lucky to buy it when we did; a block of land near by just went under contract at $1.5 million. People are starting to really appreciate this location.”

Over the years the Berneys have carried out some work on the property, such as adding an indoor-outdoor back patio room, pool, as well as updating the kitchen.

Despite being a decade old it wouldn’t look out of place among any high-end, modern homes being built today

“My dad was a builder, so I appreciate quality and I can see the builders went above and beyond with everything in this house,” Brian said.

“It’s pretty tough getting a build done these days, with the rising material and labour costs, so this is a great prospect for someone who wants to move in and start enjoying life now,” he said.

The house has direct access to the ocean and room for a large boat on its pontoon, for those chasing a water-based lifestyle. Or you can simply lay back and enjoy what is the Berneys’ favourite section of the house – the outdoor extension.

“It’s quite a big area, with a barbecue, TV, bar, motorised blinds and electric heaters. You can sit and entertain out there all year round. We spend most of our days out there.”

While the Berney’s children are well into adulthood, they said the safety and security of living in a gated estate where children can play safely in the street is a big plus.

“There’s no through traffic and residents drive carefully, looking out for children. We would never not live in a gated estate now,” Brian said.
