Slip-up over Genia’s exit to France
THE Queensland Reds’ climb out of the Super Rugby cellar has been hit with another distraction after confirmation of Will Genia’s post-World Cup move to Stade Francais.
Queensland bosses had been hoping to sit on the decision – made months ago – but Genia’s new employer let slip the announcement on the eve of the Reds’ critical visit to Melbourne to face the Rebels.
It was the latest sideshow to hit the team in a disappointing campaign that has included James Horwill’s departure and replacement as captain, a preseason injury to Quade Cooper and the saga of Karmichael Hunt’s cocaine conviction.
Genia, a 105-game Reds veteran, said his French rugby move was for family reasons.
“This has been an extremely big and difficult decision that I have spoken to my family and Queensland Rugby about at length,” Genia said.
“Having our first baby, Olivia, has changed my perspective and Vanessa and I decided we wanted to experience life in a different part of the world.”
Genia’s three-year contract with the Top 14 club begins after this year’s World Cup.
“It’s a great signing and one which will strengthen our squad in a vital position,” Stade Francais president Thomas Savare said in a radio interview in France.
The 27-year-old’s departure will open a permanent opportunity at the Reds for long term understudy Nick Frisby.
