SNOW THIS IS WINTER?

-

morning and overnight temperatures dipping as low as 6C from Monday.

Forecaster Dean Narramore from the Bureau of Meteorology said the daytime temperature would fall to a nippy 15C and 40-50km/h winds would make it feel even cooler.

“We might see this kind of cold front once every two winters – it’s definitely one of the strongest cold fronts we’ll see for the year,” Mr Narramore said.

“Due to the wind chill, it’ll feel like it’s 10 or 11 degrees during the day.”

But sorry kids, Elsa the snow queen didn’t create this blizzard. “The polar air mass is moving north over the weekend which is why you’re seeing this cold front,” he said.

“The cold will bring some possible showers with chances of a storm on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

“As the wind change comes through, the temperature will drop to around 18C and there’ll be 40-50km/h winds.”

The early morning grind will be all the more difficult as kids head back to school in 16C weather on Monday morning, which is slated to be the coldest day on the calendar.

Retailers though, are feeling some warmth from the weather.

“We’ve seen an influx of shoppers visiting Robina Town Centre in the past week to stock up on their winter woollies in readiness for this weekend’s expected cold snap,” Robina Town Centre stylist Brittney Moroko said.

“For Gold Coasters looking to rug up and beat the winter chill, layering is the key and allows the wearer to remove or add extra layers as needed.

“Shoppers are seeking out puffer jackets and vests, cosy blanket capes, chunky knits and oversized scarfs and snoods, while ribbed midiskirts and ripped skinny jeans are also popular winter purchases.”
