Knights putting shirt on a victory
NEVER has the logjam in the middle of the Gold Coast District ladder been more apparent than today.
The Griffith Uni Knights will force their way into the top four if they can win on the club’s Ladies Day against a struggling Coolangatta Tweed Barbarians side in Benowa this afternoon.
Meanwhile the Bond Pirates (47 points) and Helens- vale Hogs (49 points) will go head to head with the loser likely to slip into the bottom four and having to fight their way back into finals contention in the last round of the season next week.
Bond Pirates coach Lincoln Matehaere said despite what looked to be a seasonending knee injury to star prop Sam Webb last week, he would look to a home crowd at Pizzey Park in Miami to lift the spirits of his side.
Matehaere said he hoped the Pirates would draw on how far they had come since claiming the wooden spoon in last year’s competition in order to spur them on against the Hogs.
“I think it’s good for the clubs to have that hard competition,” he said.
“The better team’s going to deserve it in the end.
“We’ve had a lot of injuries lately so we’re really starting to feel it now.
“We’ve just got to keep pushing through and believe that we can do it from where we were last year.”
The Griffith Uni Knights will auction their jerseys specially made for the Ladies Day celebration.
Proceeds from the day will go to the Animal Welfare League of Queensland, which is the club’s long-time preferred charity.
In other Gold Coast District matches, the Nerang Bulls will host the Palm Beach Currumbin Alleygators, and the Gold Coast Eagles will play off against Surfers Paradise for one and two on the ladder.
