Tigers leap for record

- TERRY WILSON AUSSIE RULES

UNBEATEN Labrador are tracking a club record winning streak that dates back two decades to the glory days under multiple premiership coach Neville Fields.

With 11 successive wins this QAFL season, the Tigers will front up to Broadbeach in a Gold Coast derby at H&A Oval in Broadbeach Waters at 1.30pm today.

Win and the Tigers will equal winning streaks established in 1994 and 1996 under Col Bourke.

It would be one shy of the 13 in a row in 1995 and two off the record 14 in a row from Round 5 of 1995 to the opening match of the 1996 season.

The 1994 flag was the last time Labrador won a premiership.

While creating a new mark for successive wins would be a great achievement, current coach Steve Daniel gets edgy when the subject of unbeaten runs comes up.

“The main thing I’m worried about at the moment is trying to get some players back on the park and make sure our list stays pretty healthy,” said Daniel.

Missing today will be Tom Daniel (groin) Brett Davis (ankle), Josh Clark (knee), Chris Turner (family commitment) and unavailable Suns coaching duo Josh Fraser and Matty Lappin.

“Obviously we’re playing some good footy at the moment and we’d like to keep that going,’’ Daniel said.

“I’m worried about the boys’ mindset after a good win against Western Magpies last weekend. They were right up for that.”

Broadbeach need a win to stay in the finals hunt from their current ladder position of seven.

Elsewhere today, Surfers Paradise will host second bottom side Mt Gravatt at Sir Bruce Small Park in Benowa (2pm) and Palm Beach-Currumbin are away to University of Queensland at St Lucia in Brisbane (2pm).
