SMALL TALK

-

Back home after a business trip to Europe is realtor Lucy Cole. As with any journey to a foreign land, driving can be problematic and especially when you are relying on GPS to plot your course. Driving through Athens, she dutifully obeyed the spoken instructions and wondered why people along the road were all waving at her. Of course it had nothing to do with protests or friendly natives but more to do with the fact she was merrily driving on the tram tracks. At least it wasn’t done here on the Sundale Bridge where she would have been guaranteed a frontpage spread.

Jordan Paris may have found fame (or notoriety) for his toothsome audition on Australia’s Got Talent a few years back but he is so much more than that public persona. He is one of the executive producers and stars of Alfa Maschi, an independent art house production which has just started filming. We loved the synopsis. “The story of a mafia underworld identity, the plot meanders through the violent, the hilarious, the ridiculous and the Shakespearean, while also marinating in the sexuality of a young intuitive mobster.” That covers pretty much everything. All going well, the film should be ready for distribution next year.

Someone who isn’t waiting around to be discovered is Vivien Emsworth. Having wowed everyone who saw her in the recently finished Arts Centre Gold Coast production of Miss Saigon, young Vivien is moving over to London to see what the bright lights of the West End have to offer. Auditions, auditions and more auditions will be her life for a while.

Some words of praise for Mayor Tom Tate’s desire to dress for the occasion. Example number one. When the Southport branch of the Embroiderers Guild of Queensland held a 40th anniversary, Tom was there in a wildly colourful, handknitted coat of many colours that would have made Joseph envious. The second example of Tom’s sartorial splendour was at d’Arcy’s Arms Christmas in July party where he wore a hand-embroidered Santa Claus get-up with reindeer shirt to help set the theme. It must be one enormous wardrobe in the Tate household.

Speaking of dressing for the occasion, a big gold star to vigneron Grant Burge and his wife Helen. At their winemaker’s dinner at Vanitas this week, they both wore red, in keeping with the company’s renowned ability to produce top reds. Loved it!
