Lucky dip trio shine, it’s once in Blue moon

- RAY THOMAS ROSEHILL

IN this era of multimilliondollar yearlings, it is rare to find a racehorse for less than $10,000 that is good enough to win city races.

So, the odds of having three at once must be astronomical.

But this is reality for Wyong trainer Kristen Buchanan.

Her “three amigos” – Two Blue, Lucky Liaison and Lucky News – are all modestly bred but have developed into Sydney winners. Two Blue was retained by her breeders while Lucky Liaison and Lucky News were passed in after bids of just a few thousand dollars.

“They might not be RollsRoyces but they try hard to win races,’’ Buchanan said “If I had a stable full of horses like these three, I would be laughing.’’

Already this winter, Two Blue has won at Rosehill and finished a close second in the Listed Civic Stakes; Lucky News won at the Gold Coast last Saturday and this week Lucky Liaison scored at Warwick Farm.

Buchanan’s bargain buys have proved to be bonanzas for their connections.

Two Blue has won seven races and more than $300,000, Lucky Liaison is an eight-time winner of $240,000 and Lucky News has won six races and nearly $120,000.

At Rosehill today, Buchanan’s stable star Two Blue is the $4.40 favourite for the Listed $100,000 Winter Stakes over 1400m.

Buchanan said Two Blue had trained well since being run down by Haussmann near the Civic Stakes finish line.

“Two Blue has had two weeks between runs — she was very game last start and is bright and ready to go,’’ she said. “She had a quick back-up into the Civic Stakes … but she came through it really well.’’
