Cornrow’s trainer has more faith

- BEN DORRIES DOOMBEN

TRAINER Peter Hulbert is glad it isn’t a fashion contest at Doomben today because he reckons former Blue Diamond Stakes placegetter Cornrow looks like “a woolly sheep’’.

But he cannot believe the sprinter – who had elite twoyear-old form when he was trained by Mick Price in Victoria – has been written off by bookmakers.

Hulbert thought Cornrow might be $4-$5 in QTIS 3YO Handicap (1200m) today and was stunned when he was put up at $21.

“I can’t believe he is that price,” Hulbert said. “I don’t know what I am missing.

“In his first run in Queensland he was three-deep facing the breeze at Doomben and stuck on really well.

“Then the other day he was beaten into second in fast time at the Gold Coast by a horse (Nothing Like Luca) which wasn’t beaten too far in the Ramornie.’’

Hulbert got Cornrow when the gelding’s original owners wanted out when he never lived up to his early 2YO form, which included a third behind Earthquake in the 2014 Blue Diamond at Caulfield.

The Brisbane trainer, a selfdescribed “battler’’ who has 15 horses on his books and is planning to go into a training partnership with his son Will, was delighted to get Cornrow in his stable.

“My wife now owns 10 per cent of him and we think he is an absolute gem.’’

Hulbert said punters looking to get a mounting yard lead today should not be turned off when they see Cornrow coming out to parade – as the trainer has let his coat grow.

“He is as woolly as a sheep,’’ Hulbert said.

“He will go out after this weekend and have a nice spell and a well-deserved break.”
