Dogs’ barks dismissed
FOOTBALL operations manager Marcus Ashcroft claims the Gold Coast will not get into a “slanging match” with the Western Bulldogs over the recruitment of high performance manager Justin Cordy.
Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge yesterday criticised the Suns over the move, describing it as “disrespectful”.
“I find it unusual that (Gold Coast) wouldn’t run a process and do everything they can to find the absolute best candidate,” Beveridge said. “We really rate Justin, he’s been terrific for us.
“For me that’s really convenient and interesting that they just headhunt someone from an AFL club.
“I find that really disappointing.”
Ashcroft said the Suns were comfortable they acted appropriately at all times.
“We were in the open market competing for the services of Justin with a number of other clubs,” Ashcroft said.
“We are pleased that he has chosen to join the Gold Coast Suns once his contractual obligations with the Bulldogs are complete at the end of the season.”
Beveridge said the Bulldogs had yet to decide if Cordy would see out the year with them, although he would definitely travel to Geelong for this afternoon’s Round 16 clash with the Cats at Simonds Stadium.
“Justin is a contracted member of our staff and for me it’s really disrespectful of the Suns to talk publicly about their new relationship with him,” he said.
“They’ve really in some ways crossed the line I think and that’s disappointing.
“There are scruples and there’s integrity and I’m just not sure whether there has been integrity in what the Suns have done and the way they’re talking about it now.”
