Chantay Logan checks out the latest hip new cafe to hit Burleigh
The Richards family have another hit on their hands with this hidden oasis at Burleigh Heads
ICONIC Burleigh Arcade has come back to life. The previously sleepy pocket between James St and Park Avenue is now home to cosy cafe Urbanistar, while Canteen continues to lure caffeine connoisseurs.
The biggest breath of fresh air – an indoor forest of hanging foliage framing Your Organic Pantry – comes courtesy of cafe royalty, the Richards family.
After a six-month break from the business, the founders of Department of Coffee and Plantation House are back with what they are calling Social Brew Burleigh. Amanda, Nathan, Anna and Mark’s experienced hand shows in the wholesome menu – raw, organic and homemade figure heavily – treat-loaded cabinet and myriad clever touches.
Try the open-baked Eastern Farm omelette ($14), which is packed with creamy Danish fetta, sun-dried tomato, mushrooms, sweet caramelised onions and a sprinkle of baby spinach, or a toasted brioche morning burger ($8.50) layered with two fried eggs and bacon.
The Social bircher ($12) brims with goodness, including coconut, almonds, chia seeds, natural strained yoghurt, linseeds, sliced apple, pomegranate and honeycomb.
The refreshment range roams from smartly bottled cold-pressed juices to Nutella milkshakes; there’s even affordable kid-sized serves.
Their iced coffee ($6) really won me over.
Deconstructed on a tray, it’s a caffeine chemistry experiment with a beaker of warm, frothy milk, vials of cold press and sweetener and a glass loaded with coffee ice cubes.
Gimmick aside, the genius part is it allows you to build strength and sweetness exactly to your taste.
There’s no question the Richards’ have another hit on their hands with Social Brew.
