IT’S fair to say Jack Stone has a bee in his bonnet.

The Bee One Third beekeeper views bees in the way others view cute puppies.

He can calmly rest his face on the honey-filled slabs of wood and stinging insects without a flying fuss.

“They know me,” Mr Stone, also known as the bee whisperer, said.

“I am like their master. Sometimes they do try to sting me but you flick them away.

“It’s all about not being aggressive with them and having the correct, gentle approach.”

Having created 11 rooftop beehives in Brisbane, Mr Stone, 26, is bringing Bee One Third to the Gold Coast in a bid to boost declining bee populations.

He has teamed with The Brickworks Centre in Southport to launch the Gold Coast’s largest rooftop beehive project.

More than 250,000 bees will be hard at work to produce an expected 480kg of signature Brickworks-flavoured honey in the first year.

“The bees will travel up to 7km to collect nectar, so thousands of different local plants will be reflected in the flavour of the honey,” Mr Stone said.

“By bringing bees into a city but nestling them away on a rooftop they’re out of sight and out of mind.”

The Brickworks will unveil its rooftop hive at its Eat Play Live event next Saturday. A TEENAGER jailed for joyriding in Bronco Darius Boyd’s stolen luxury Audi has walked out of a low-security prison just weeks after being sentenced to 18 months behind bars.

Police were last night hunting for Hayley Gillespie, 19, and fellow inmate Mary Brimble, also 19, after the pair went missing from their Gold Coast Hinterland prison farm yesterday afternoon.

Gillespie bought the stolen luxury car belonging to NRL star Boyd for a small quantity of drugs, using it and two other high-end vehicles to get her kicks on joy rides.

Yesterday, she and Brimble walked out of the Numinbah low-security prison and got into a car.

Brimble is serving a 22month sentence for robbery with actual violence and occasioning actual bodily harm.

Hours later, when a prison headcount was conducted, officers raised the alarm that the prisoners had absconded.

Regional duty officer Jim Plowman said it was unclear whether the pair was still together.

“We’ll be knocking on a few doors and an investigation is under way,” he said.

The Numinbah prison has also housed convicted con man Peter Foster and is de- signed to encourage a self-directed rehabilitation.

It looks more like a rural homestead than a prison.

Police described Brimble as having multiple tattoos on her right arm, including the words “Mareeba Baby Juggalette”.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
