RIGHT TIME FOR FLATHEAD
There has never been a better time to catch a beauty out of local waters especially for anyone gearing up for next month’s popular Flathead Classic
IT was a fishing trip that yielded plenty of quality flathead – but this beauty was one of the best.
A stoked Angus Sherring, 12, recalls he was very excited to haul the 61cm fish aboard, particularly given it was between the 40-75cm range which means it can be taken home for dinner.
“It was pretty cool to see one that size,” he tells Coast Weekend.
“I haven’t really caught one that size before. It fought pretty hard for about 10 minutes.”
The keen Gold Coast fisherman, using a light Shimano rod and 2kg line, pulled it out of the southern part of the Broadwater near Crab Island during a boating trip two weeks ago.
Angus, who was taken out on a boat by an older cousin, says he was using a pig lure, which are made locally by Shane Gardner and those on the boat caught more than 12 flathead on the day.
Gold Coast FM fishing commentator Herb Sechner says it is a great time for catching flathead: “This is flathead breeding season. It’s when they move from the upper reaches to the lower reaches – and you have some big fish chasing bait fish heading up for spawning season.”
The famed Flathead Classic on the Gold Coast is now under a month away, kicking off at the end of the month and running the first few days in October.
The number of teams for the popular event is limited to 200.
