Trick to treating

- LUCY KINBACHER LUCY.KINBACHER@NEWS.COM.AU

LITTLE vampires and zombies will haunt Gold Coast streets tonight as they knock on doors and fill their pockets with lollies for Halloween.

The spooky celebrations have gained traction locally as residents stock up on sweets, pumpkins and decorations in preparation for trick or treaters.

Not everybody is an expert in the haunted craze though, so the Gold Coast Bulletin has come to your aid with a rookies guide to Halloween.

WHAT DO YOU FEED THESE LITTLE CRITTERS? Anything with sugar will go off like a treat. Local supermarkets usually stock a wide range of Halloween-themed candy with the popular choices this year being chocolate fangs, skulls and foil wrapped pumpkins. Don’t be the homeowner who has to give the kids grapes because the lolly supply has run out, so buy more bags than you think you’ll need.

WHAT WILL THESE DOOR KNOCKERS LOOK LIKE? Be prepared to see all of your worst nightmares at your front door tonight. Star Wars’ movie characters are the big front runners for most popular costume with plenty of Darth Vader, Storm Trooper and Princess Leia dress-ups running around. Pirates and vampires will also be clearly spotted. If you’re after a creative and unique idea why not mix and match characters. And don’t forget about the pets, everybody loves a good looking Bat Dog. WHAT IS THE ETIQUETTE INVOLVED WITH TRICK OR TREATING? Not everybody is in the scary mood so it’s important for trick or treaters and residents to be respectful of each other. Residents can head to the Queensland Police News website and download special Halloween posters to place on their doors signalling whether trick or treaters are welcome. For those who welcome trick or treaters, leave a light on outside or hang a balloon off of your mailbox.

HOW CAN I STAY SAFE ON THIS SCARY NIGHT? Trick or treaters should al- ways travel in pairs or groups and be accompanied by an adult who should walk with the children to each house and wait for them. Trick or treaters should refrain from eating their lollies until they get home where parents can inspect them and dispose of any unwrapped, open or suspicious treats. WHEN WILL THESE DOOR KNOCKS START AND STOP? There really are no set rules for when the haunted celebrations all begin. Parents of younger children should consider trick or treating while it’s still light. Older children should be considerate and wrap things up about 10pm.
