A ZEST FOR HIS CRESTA

Anders Sundberg has just bought a new Cresta and can’t wait to take it tripping around the boat show circuit, regaling all with the long love affair he and his family have enjoyed with boats and the ocean

ANDERS SUNDBERG ENTREPRENEUR What’s in the harbour? A 70-foot Cresta Motor Yacht. It’s brand new. We haven’t even commissioned it yet. It’s new, new, new. Two months ago I had a look at one of their boats. This is going to be used as a demo. It’s been living here at Mariner’s Cove for two weeks. I’m taking it to Miami for the Miami Boat Show then it will go to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, then Nice and then Cannes. And then it will live in Ibiza. It’s like a Formula One racer, this thing; it’s ridiculously fast. We will go to the Broadwater and do doughnuts in her. It cruises at 40 knots.

What is your boating background? I grew up on yachts. We had boats much bigger than this: this is a dinghy compared to what my family had.

Favourite trips you’ve done? Stockholm obviously. Ha ha. With the boys. We almost sunk one on that trip. Classic. We literally almost sunk it.We hit a submerged log and sprung a leak. It was a slow leak. We were three sheets to the wind and we were like it will be fine. So we went out all night and when I stepped back on the boat later I was in three feet of water and I was like ‘Ah, this is not good’. This was back in the late ’70s.

What do you love about being on the water? It’s just so nice being on the water. How do you explain it. Everything is so casual, it strips away all the veneers. I just love being on the water and getting all my mates together and going for trips. My parents were always jetsetting around everywhere when I was growing up and they would call me from somewhere and say ‘Anders, can you run through the systems on the boat, the bathroom, toilets and showers’ because otherwise they seize up. And so I would call my mates and we would be smashing it up in Stockholm or somewhere. And we had many boats. At any one time, we always had two.

Favourite place in Australia for boating? I like it here on the Gold Coast, just port surfing. We can do Surfers Paradise to Sydney in a day. In Australia, the Gold Coast is the best for boating. It’s unbeatable. All the main manufacturers are here like Maritimo, Riviera. You have all the support services.
