Massive auction gets motors racing
A GOLD Coast auction house is bracing for a big weekend selling thousands of quirky vintage items and classic Holden cars in one of Australia’s biggest ever memorabilia sell-offs.
Carrara-based Lloyds Auctions is overseeing the mega sale of a Toowoombabased collection of 140-plus Holdens and classic cars, military trinkets and hardware, plus other assorted historic items.
After receiving responsibility for the mass auction of a lifelong collection by Roy and Kerry Gorring, six Lloyds staff spent every day for a month straight logging and photographing items.
Lot highlights include Model T Fords, a bright red 1980s Coca-Cola bike, a replica of Australian country music great Slim Dusty’s caravan “Big Bertha’’ and a 1974 Holden HQ panel van. Other items include a jukebox and military trinkets made of spent bombshells.
The auction is running over six days at Hampton, just north of Toowoomba, but keen buyers can participate online.
Lloyds Auctions spokesman Bill Freeman said the country would probably never see anything like the sale again and it was the biggest personal haul of classic cars and assorted items he’d ever come across.
The Gorrings, in their 60s, had asked for no reserve price on any item.
“This is Roy Gorring’s lifetime passion and he prefers the cars to be driven rather than displayed,’’ Mr Freeman said.
He said Lloyds had received so many inquiries it had set up a dedicated phone number to handle them.
The auction started on Thursday and finishes on Tuesday.
