Young growing old waiting for trophy

MURWILLUMBAH Football Club’s Corey Young could be the unluckiest player in the region.

The Gold Coast soccer stalwart’s legend is growing, but not for the reasons he would have hoped.

Young will go into the offseason with the unenviable record of seven grand final appearances without success following the club’s 3-2 loss to Surfers Paradise in the Gold Coast Premier League grand final last weekend.

The 35-year-old went into this year’s decider quietly confident he could finally break the drought.

However, he was left watching the opposing team celebrate again.

“We were pretty confident because we played Surfers three times already this season and we had two draws and a win against them,” Young said.

“So we thought we were in with a decent chance but it’s just one of those things.

“It takes a massive amount of effort just to get there.

“Everything has to go your way on the day, and it just hasn’t.

“A few of the boys ripped into me on Saturday night about it. They think I might be a bit of a bad luck charm or something.”

Adding to the centre back’s disappointment is the fact he has lost nearly half of the games by just one goal.

Young has played close to 400 games of soccer across the Gold Coast and Tweed region since the age of eight.

He has turned out for Southport, Gold Coast Knights and Burleigh before playing for Murwillumbah.

Last weekend’s loss may have put retirement plans for Young on hold, as he hoped to end his career by finally lifting a trophy.

“I am considering retiring. I have two small kids so I’ll weigh it up over the next few weeks,’’ he said.

“I would have definitely retired if we had of won but then there is always that thought of maybe next year.

“I’ll think about it over the next few weeks.”
