Weekend Gold Coast Bulletin

Main Roads data shows the Pacific Motorway could reach vehicle capacity on some sections in the north as early as next year. How would you in Government solve that?

AFirstly, we have to deal with some of the critical issues on the M1, and around the exits. People like (Albert MP) Mark Boothman and I have inspected those exits, the cars backing on down the motorway in peak times. That’s not only a traffic issue, it’s a safety issue as well. So we will be making certain announcements in relation to the M1 motorway as well as looking at what are some of the other options available to relieve the pressure on the M1. I think at some stage we are going to need to start thinking about alternative routes to the M1 to provide connectivity to Brisbane and from Brisbane to the Gold Coast. There’s been a policy move from next month to move trucks into the left-hand lanes of the motorway. Truckies have said this will be dangerous. Do you think this has been a knee-jerk reaction, and would you be prepared to review policy like that? Certainly very happy to take on board the advice of the people

QAwho drive those big vehicles. They’re experienced. I think the problem is about driver behaviour and courtesy to other drivers, not just moving the trucks to the left lane. I’m sure the trucks can manage it, it’s whether everyone else on the road can. Light rail stage three – there is a row going on with your Burleigh MP Michael Hart and the council. He is opposed to the tram line going south. What’s your position? It is important we listen to the community. And I know Michael is pretty fierce in his advocacy to protect some of the iconic areas in his electorate. The Mayor (Tom Tate) will need to make the case for light rail and a business case will need to stack up as the best solution to moving people on that linear line.
