TAYLAH DRIVES HER OWN CAR LEGACY

- CONNOR O’BRIEN @obrien_GCB

MENTORED by James Courtney. Inspired by Simona De Silvestro. The building blocks are in place for Currumbin Waters teenager Taylah Agius to chase her motorsport dream.

Two weeks ago, Agius was crowned Queensland champion in the KA3 Junior classification in a significant step in her budding career.

The 15-year-old this weekend is racing on home turf, entered into both the KA2 and KA3 Junior divisions at the Race of Stars in Pimpama.

She is striving for a podium finish in both categories, a week before De Silvestro – a trailblazer for all rising female racers across the country – steers her Supercar in the Gold Coast 600.

“Definitely I look up to her,” Agius said. “I really want to make Supercars and I think she is a great role model.

“Just how she conducts herself on the track and off the track … she is really good with that.”

While the Swiss star has almost always been the sole woman on the various grids she has been on, Agius is part of a changing landscape; she is one of 13 females competing at the Race of Stars.

Agius followed her father Jason into motorsport four

years ago. She now races for Courtney’s brand JC Kart and has soaked up guidance from the 2010 Supercars champion.

Courtney, who still remembers the first time a touring car driver in Glenn Seton greeted him, is committed to helping the next generation, with a focus on being able to commercially “position yourself because motor racing is expensive”.

“She hasn’t really been in the sport that long but she is very professional in the way she presents herself and is not afraid to mix it up with the boys,” he said.

Agius will be on track today and tomorrow.
