Cider a fast way to diet

- LANAI SCARR

AUSTRALIANS were all about the “apple cider vinegar diet” in 2017 – Google’s most searched weight loss scheme.

The zest for wellness and weight loss was ever present in our laptop searches in the year that was, with a mix of celebrity-inspired diets and more balanced scientific approaches.

The “CSIRO low carb diet” was the second most searched term by Aussie dieters in 2017 and the “Eddie McGuire diet” was fourth on the list.

The Collingwood president and TV host lost 15kg in three weeks by following the same Chinese herb fasting diet that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his wife Lucy did.

The apple cider vinegar diet involves participants including several tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in their diet daily. It is supposed to suppress appetite meaning you eat less.

Google’s Camilla Ibrahim said while Australians were searching for diets online, we were also looking for hearty meals too.

“Aussies were searching for both flexible and extreme diets in 2017, from apple cider vinegar to CSIRO and celebrity inspired,” Ms Ibrahim said. “However, it’s clear we’re still craving hearty dishes – as beef stroganoff, chilli con carne and chicken parmigiana featured on the list of top trending recipes.”

Accredited practising dietitian and Dietitian Association Australia’s spokesman Joel Feren said there were some weird and wacky diets of 2017 but hoped in 2018 people would return to the healthy eating movement.

“I certainly saw a resurgence of the cabbage soup diet, the GM diet and other diets that really restrict certain food groups,” he said.

Mr Feren said 2018 would bring a new wave of fads.

Nutritionist and cookbook author Lola Berry said 2018 was about “whole foods” and agreed more balance was important.

“Forget about the packet junk, just focus on real foods,” Ms Berry said.
