REVELLERS’ PARADISE AS COAST SKY IGNITES

- KATE PARASKEVOS

FOR more than a decade, pyrotechnician Nick Kozij has been delighting revellers as he lights up the skies with fireworks extravaganzas.

Now the Skylighter FireworX technician will be setting up more than five tonnes of fireworks, including 50,000 dazzling pyrotechnic effects, for the Surfers Paradise New Year’s Eve fireworks celebrations, which he says will be the “biggest and most impressive” on the Coast.

Mr Kozij said despite a poor forecast, the show would go on “rain, hail or shine”.

“We are pretty used to summer storms in Queensland so it (rain) won’t affect us,” he said. “We have everything waterproofed so the show will go on – maybe just bring an umbrella.”

Mr Kozij said there would be some brand new fireworks to provide a “kaleidoscope of colours”.

“The 8pm and 10pm fireworks will be reflective on the year that’s been, including a rainbow display for marriage equality,” he said.

“And the midnight fireworks will be about the year to come with the Commonwealth Games and a big finale to send the Gold Coast into the new year.”

The choreographed fireworks will rocket 250m into the stars across 100m, creating a sparkling panorama, exploding to a soundtrack of iconic Australian tunes.

Skylighter FireworX managing director Max Brunner said he wanted “maximum oohs and ahhs”.

“We are using more than 10km of wiring and cabling to create this epic display,” he said.
