DUNEMANN AND SCHLOSS ENGENDERING TEAM

-

AFTER decades of travelling and living off contracts, Andrew Dunemann is happy to be settled.

Life at Bilambil will do that to you.

“I was involved fulltime in footy since I was 17,” said Dunemann, who played at seven top-level rugby league clubs in Australia and England between 1994 and 2007.

“When I retired I went straight into coaching. You sort of get to that stage, when you are on a year-to-year contract, you sometimes want to control your own destiny.”

The vehicle for that destiny is Boom Racing Thoroughbreds, a horse syndication business that Dunemann and good mate Jeremy Schloss run with their wives Karen and Peta from their Bilambil and Tweed homes.

“Luckily for us, it’s starting to go really well,” Dunemann said. “This is a little bit of controlling our own destiny but mainly it’s because we love the horses.”

More than 200 people have taken shares in the nine thoroughbreds they have syndicated. More yearlings will be bought at the Magic Millions sales this month.

The growth of the business has Dunemann and Schloss, a health and safety officer, hoping to open an office in Coolangatta this year so they can expand operations.

Dunemann said the experience of playing and coaching rugby league had given him a good grounding for the business.

“Our background is completely different to nearly everyone else in syndications,” he said.

“We were in a team environment, a sporting environment, whereas others are accountants or from that sort of field.
