HE spent 14 years travelling the world playing polo, but Rob Archibald is as excited as anyone about the Magic Millions launch event tomorrow.

The former professional, one of Australia’s top players for more than a decade, is one of the top names saddling up alongside Argentinian star Nacho Figueras for the Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo.

It is the second year running that polo is kicking off the Magic Millions yearling sale carnival and it promises to be one of the social highlights.

Not only will the day out at Doug Jennings Park at The Spit feature royal family member and British equestrian Zara Phillips and her husband – former English rugby union captain – Mike Tindall, it includes a two-part concert by country music star Adam Harvey.

With entry prices for adults at $35, Mr Archibald said it was a bargain for the quality of the polo on show along with everything else.

Three matches are scheduled – one featuring rising Australian talent, a jockeys versus trainers match, and a final professionals game in which Mr Archibald will play.

Mr Archibald is now focusing on becoming a horse trainer but said he still loved to play.

“I have always loved it. I like what they are trying to do, making it more accessible. It’s going to be a seriously good day, being the second year everything will be a bit better,” he said.

“There are still going to be spills and thrills. It’s a proper game and everyone is competitive once they get out there.

“It would be hard to find a better setting than the one here, surrounded by water.

“It’s a smaller field but it’s kind of like polo’s version of Twenty20 cricket. It’s fastpaced, lots of action and the crowds are closer.”

Tickets, including tiered hospitality options, range from $100 for the Woodford Reserve and $220 per person for the Pacific Fair Pavilion.

Children under 15 years of age are free.
