FINDING CODE’S PLACE
Q
The place of events such as rugby sevens at Commonwealth and Olympic Games are sometimes questioned. Do players really see these as the pinnacle, compared to the World Series?
A
I really think so and part of that has been answered by the teams. Most of the sevens teams didn’t send their strong squads to Hong Kong (last weekend) because of how much importance they put on the Commonwealth Games.
For sevens particularly, it is a great experience leading into what an Olympics is going to be like because otherwise you don’t really experience that kind of competition where it’s in an athlete’s village. The opportunity to compete in a Commonwealth Games should be high up on any athlete’s list.
Q
Who’s your tip for the men’s gold medal?
A
South Africa would be right up there. They are looking to go back-to-back. They also have got great form this year in the World Series and outside of that it is Fiji, who have just won the Hong Kong Sevens.
