Weekend Gold Coast Bulletin

Listen, learn and respect everyone

- LEONIE SMITH, SMITH COMMERCIAL

FIRST JOB AND WHERE ARE YOU NOW?

My first job was as an equestrian instructor and manager in Windsor, NSW. I moved from Taree when I was 18years-old with my ute, my horse and a float filled with equipment and feed, and one suitcase for me. I launched Smith Commercial five-anda-half years ago to provide lease, sale, management and advisory services to commercial property clients. Our latest project is the exciting residential and retail transformation of the former 2018 Commonwealth Games Athletes Village. It’s currently the largest urban renewal project on the Gold Coast and will set a new standard for retail in the area, anchored by a full-line Woolworths supermarket and BWS.

BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

My dad always used to say, ‘You’ll always learn more by listening than you ever will by talking’. I’ve learned to mostly curb my natter now but occasionally go into the red zone.

WHAT YOU WISH YOU KNEW WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED?

Sometimes the best things happen when life and business don’t go to plan. It’s surprising how often things go a way you’d never imagined and then you’re grateful for a lifetime. I’ve met so many wonderful people and journeyed along with them when something was awry.

YOUR GOLDEN RULE IN BUSINESS?

Ask lots of questions, listen, and be respectful of people’s thoughts and beliefs. I especially love hearing people’s stories; where they’ve come from, what they plan to do next in life. I’ve noticed most really successful people I know read biographies.

A LONG LUNCH — A WASTE OF TIME OR ESSENTIAL?

Essential for ongoing client relationships and to enjoy their company on a social basis. It needs to be done regularly, not only for the clients, but also to support the fantastic cafes and restaurants on the Gold Coast.

WHO IS IN YOUR BUSINESS MOBILE’S SPEED DIAL?

My husband, six clients, and four team members.

IF YOU HAD $1M SPARE WHAT WOULD YOU INVEST IN RIGHT NOW?

Artificial intelligence in cancer health care to learn more about the disease to instigate early detection, diagnosis and treatment. I have too many friends battling, or lost to, this disease.

WHAT SHOULD PRIMARY STUDENTS BE STUDYING?

The emotional skills of socialisation fostered through teamwork (without screens), good manners, empathy and respect.

BIGGEST FRUSTRATION DOING BUSINESS ON THE GOLD COAST AND HOW TO FIX IT?

The GCCC flood plan, which has halted over $700 million in future industry and job growth in the Coomera marine precinct. Either Council needs to re-evaluate or the State will need to step in, in relation to balancing the merits of the plan against the economic development.
