OLYMPICS CALLING

-

Q

You went to two Olympics for kayaking. Did you get the best out of yourself?

A

I wasn’t stoked with how I finished in Rio in 2016. I didn’t finish on a great note (sixth in K1 500 semi-final). I was really stoked with the build-up and lead-up into Rio and to get there was a big deal (after a race-off to win the K1 spot) but my performance wasn’t great. There were a lot of outside factors but I’m so grateful I went and it was a great opportunity. But I’m a little let down in myself with my actual performance on the day. It grates me.

Q

Do you ever think that the Tokyo Olympics are just two years away and you could go again?

A

I haven’t ruled it out but I’m not signing up for it. I’m actually just not sure what I’m doing. I just enjoy paddling – whether that’s an ocean ski or a kayak. I like being out there and I like being on the water and it’s hard to lock into either/or. But this is my priority at the moment. Have you done any ski or kayak races recently? Are you looking at getting back into racing?

A

I did do a Downwind Ski Race in the US in June and really enjoyed it as I had a win over there. Shaw and Partners financial got me over there to race for them – it was very cool. I might do another race in Australia if I can get the time. Do you ever wish you could go back and put your coach’s head on your athlete’s body?

A

I don’t think so. I wish I did things differently. Just experiencing what I’ve been through and going from one sport to another and coming back, I think I’d do things a little bit differently.
