IT’S ON FOR YOUNG AND OLD AT THE GYMNASIUM

-

IT was a day for the golden oldies at Day 7 of the National Clubs Gymnastics Carnival at the Gold Coast.

On a competition day at Carrara that included aerobic gymnastics, trampoline gymnastics and gymnastics for all in action, it was the efforts of Woden Valley Gymnastics Club (ACT) and Team Adrenalin (VIC) that stole ths show.

Woden Valley’s Groovers and Movers – a team whose athletes are aged in their 60s and 70s, including one at 75 – were a crowd favourite with their inspiring routine entitled “Love Is In the Air”.

Team Adrenalin’s rendition of “The Greatest Showman” was of the standard you would expect from Cirque du Soleil.

Both teams were presented with a Gold Award, along with teams from Carey Gym Club (Vic), JA Gymsports (NSW) and another group representing Team Adrenalin, who performed to Ome Kayo.

The gymnastics for all competition program continued after lunch, with the staging of the inaugural National FreeG competition.

While the main aim of the event was of course to have fun, after both the times and freestyle rounds, Dubbo apprentice Josh Mann was crowned the inaugural overall FreeG champion.

On the other side of the venue, the aerobic gymnastics athletes were back in action, this time for Day 1 of their competition in which the gymnasts represent their clubs instead of their schools.

An incredible 17 gold medals were up for grabs in the first session, with athletes from Melbourne’s Loreto Toorak Gymnastics Club taking out four of the titles on offer.
