‘Class clown’ to star again

- ALEXANDRA BERNARD

HAVING passed every test so far, trainer Mel Eggleston isn’t expecting Ditmas to lose now.

Eggleston is confident Ditmas can make it three wins from three starts when he contests Class 2 Handicap (1100m) at Aquis Park today.

“He’s a promising horse and is hard to beat,” he said.

“He hasn’t let us down yet and I don’t think he will (today).”

The five-year-old gelding won his maiden race at the Gold Coast in June before racking up a Class 1 Handicap victory at Ipswich last month.

His aggregate winning margins for the two races was almost 10 lengths.

“We’re just putting him through the classes and am letting him show us where he’s headed, rather than putting him up too high,” Eggleston said.

Ditmas has had a troubled past and spent time on the paddocks of part-owner Vic Frost at Sleepy Hollow near Mooball on the NSW north coast.

With this former roguish behaviour, Eggleston said he was shocked by the good results of Ditmas.

“I’m very surprised,” he said. “He is a bit of a class clown, a bit of a scallywag, but he’s a very athletic horse and he has a good cruising speed.”

Ditmas heads into the race as $2.80 favourite with Luna Missile at $4.
