Getting the groove

PETER Senior says he finally remembers how to play.

The Australian golfing legend and Sanctuary Cove member fired a two-under par 70 on day two of the Australian PGA Championship to seal his place in the final two rounds, something the three-time winner of the tournament wasn’t able to do last year at Royal Pines.

“I played pretty ordinary the first four to 27 holes but I played pretty good the last nine,” he said of his even-par 72 on day one.

“I struggled around and then I started to hit some good shots and made a couple of birdies late.

“It’s really nice to be playing on the weekend.”

Senior’s usual accuracy from the tee abandoned him early in the event but the 59year-old found his range again to fire two birdies in his final three holes yesterday.

“I haven’t been driving it very well which is the best part of my game,” Senior said. “Normally I don’t miss too many fairways but I have driven it really badly the last couple of days.

“The last nine holes I started to get it on the fairway and it makes it a hell of a lot easier when you’re coming from the fairway.

“My coach Gary Edwin has been trying to get me to do something I must not have been doing.

“It must have finally slotted into place and I remembered how to play the game.”

Senior has spoken about his struggles to keep up with the younger generation hitting the ball longer but the Hope Island resident managed to birdie the third longest hole on the course, the 513m par 5, 12th.

“The guys I’m playing with are hitting it 50 yards in front of me but it makes it a little easier when you’re that far down the fairway,” Senior said.

“I’ll go out on the weekend and you never know. I’d just like to a good, solid finish.”
